A Practice of Stillness

We live in a world that rarely asks us to slow down. There is always something pulling at our attention—noise, movement, obligation. It becomes easy to move through our days without ever truly pausing. Painting, for me, has always been a way back to that pause. When I step into the studio and begin working, everything quiets. The simple act of placing brush to canvas, of watching color build and shift, brings me into a different state of mind—one that feels grounded and steady. It is not rushed. It is not distracted. It is focused, but also deeply calm. I am drawn to still life because it allows me to create that calm from the very beginning. I choose each object, each fabric, each element with care, arranging them until something feels balanced. I think about the relationship between shapes, the way light moves across a surface, how patterns interact with one another. There is a quiet satisfaction in bringing all of these parts together into something cohesive. Each painting becomes a kind of problem to solve—how to capture the softness of a petal, the weight of a vessel, the subtle shift between light and shadow. But it is a gentle challenge, one that unfolds slowly. Through that process, I find a sense of rhythm, especially in the repetition of patterns and brushstrokes. It is here that I often lose track of time. Portrait painting offers a different experience. Instead of arranging objects, I am working to understand a person—to capture something beyond appearance. There is a presence in a face, something intangible, and the challenge is to bring that forward in a way that feels true. It asks me to look more closely, to pay attention in a different way. Whether I am painting a still life or a portrait, my intention remains the same: to create something that holds a sense of quiet. I want my paintings to live in a space where they can be returned to again and again—not loudly, but gently. Something that offers a moment of rest, a place for the eye to settle. A reminder, perhaps, to slow down, even just for a moment. In the end, what I am really painting is not just an object or a person, but a feeling. A sense of stillness.
